Shore Develops New Family of Smart Meters
OnStream, a National Grid company that supplies meter-reading and metering services to energy suppliers across Great Britain, has launched smart meters for both electricity and gas that can communicate with similarly equipped appliances through Bluetooth-style wireless technology.
Shore Design were selected to design and develop the product platform ranging from initial aesthetics & user interface through to detailed mechanical design and launch into production.
Its ability to turn appliances on and off remotely means that customers will be able to choose cheaper "interruptible" tariffs and run their appliances at the most economic time, which will help to balance energy demand.
Steve Holliday, the chief executive of National Grid, quoted in The Times, 20th April "We believe that this meter is what the industry has been waiting for."
