NEC Computers ▪ NEC POWERMATE Desktops
Requirement
NEC Computers contacted Shore Design following the market success of their daughter company Packard Bell’s ‘Back to School’ product chain. They asked Shore to assist them in the development of their latest high performance NEC POWERMATE Desktop computer range and to support them in setting up their global supply chain. As well as develop 3 chassis – Small Form Factor, Small Desktop, and MicroTower, Shore were asked to work directly with Intel in the development of the BTX form factor silent cooling systems.
Development
The 3 product development program included the initial task of producing the optimum product BTX architecture in parallel to concept generation of multiple design solutions in sketch form. Using Shore’s highly developed ‘Design to Cost’ model, we were able to focus very early on in the development of reducing the cost of these products in respect of NEC’s old product range whilst increasing the perceived value of the new products.

Following review & selection of concepts and further aesthetic refinement, the designs progressed into full mechanical development and electronic integration. Shore worked with the supply chain in the development of all mechanical verification prototypes management of the mass production manufacturing, working to the strictest of environmentally friendly processes and WEEE directives.
Result
An range of 3 secure and virtually silent, ‘environmentally friendly’ Desktop computers ideal for deployment in networked enterprise environments such as businesses, schools, government establishment etc. giving total control over their IT infrastructures.
