TES/ 3M ▪ 3M™ XT-1 Digital Communication System
Requirement
3M’s primary focus is the customer and wanted to take Digital Communication to the Next Level. They have dedicated themselves to understanding the needs and special requirements of the Quick Serve Industry. They then focused their innovative resources on creating the next generation of Digital Wireless Communication and the new XT-1 Base Station is the first ‘drive-thru’ intercom system to offer remote self diagnostics. They approached TES Electronic Solutions to develop the XT-1 who, in turn, contacted Shore Design to support the mechanical element of the development.
Development
Working with both TES and 3M the initial task was to focus on the simplicity of use, installation, serviceability and upgrading. Initially concept generation of multiple design solutions were created in sketch form. Following reviews with 3M’s customers a selection of concepts were chosen and further refined. The design progressed into 3D CAD where full mechanical development and electronic integration took place. Shore procured all mechanical verification prototypes and assisted in the set up and management of the mass production manufacturing supply chain.

Result
A very fast development process which was delivered on time and on budget. Due to Shore Design’s use of Design for Assembly (DFA) techniques, the product can literally be assembled in seconds and comments from installers include “….easy mounting, servicing and upgrading”.
