The Medical Phone ▪ iCEphone™ Mobile Device
Requirement
Scottish entrepreneur and ex-army medical commander Andrew Mulford identified two key needs based on his military experience; firstly a reliable emergency decision support software and secondly a supporting mobile device that offers a lot more flexibility and usability than a standard PDA. To turn this vision into reality Andrew and his team turned to Shore Design.
Development
Shore Design has partnered the Medical Phone from its first tentative steps all the way through to full design & development. This entailed the creation of the innovative user interfaces and aesthetic form along with detailed mechanical engineering and full vendor support including sourcing of all key components.

The product realisation was extremely challenging due to the product’s feature rich design and slim form factor and also in the requirement for a level of robustness beyond the average mobile device; with IP54 rating and 1 metre drop test protection. Shore helped integrate the new, innovative emergency decision support software iCEaid™ developed by the Medical Phone team and now fully approved by the Red Cross.
Result
More like a “micro notebook”, when compared to the average PDA phone, the iCEphone™ was launched at the international CES tradeshow in Las Vegas and is already turning a lot of heads, generating interest and sales well beyond initial expectations. In particular it looks likely that the device will be very well adopted across the Far East and Pacific Rim, offering a unique, compelling form factor.
